Breathe In Through Nose = Bad For Singing?

breathing technique open throat

When you do yoga or sports, breathing in through the nose is good.

It hydrates the air and is probably more efficient.

When singing, we generally want to breathe in through the mouth.

Yes, the air will be dryer.

But doing this helps you to:

Get your mouth into an open position before you start singing

You get to lower your jaw, flatten your tongue, lift your soft palate using the hot fries technique (this is explained in the free ebook).

Your larynx will also be slightly lowered - giving you more resonating space

Be more economical with your breathing

Since you open your mouth to sing anyway, you might as well breathe in through the mouth. I don’t know about you but I find it confusing to breathe in through the nose when I sing.

If you do yoga or Pilates, you may have to relearn breathing habits for singing.

Namaste.
